When I was a little girl, I was terrible at coloring. My sisters were better at hopscotch and scrabble, and they always stayed inside the lines of the coloring book. My hand wandered.

When I entered college, I had dreams of writing, not art. Never art. How could someone who couldn’t color inside the lines ever become an artist?

But I was drawn to painting. I took one class called “Form and Expression”, and the professor placed three sacks of sand on the concrete floor. I got out my box of watercolors and began. Reds. Yellows. Cobalt blue. He held up my painting, full of color that didn’t exist in those plain burlap bags. “This picture gives off a feeling of joy,” he said.

I transferred into the art school that afternoon.

I didn’t mind Seth as much as many FB people did. As one approving viewer said, “The Oscars is turning into a Family Guy episode…that’s GREAT! And didn’t Seth sing well?
Hair was mostly old Hollywood, long waves that framed the face or that sweet sloppy look that looks homemade but isn’t.
The only bun I didn’t like was Kristin Chenweth, who was dwarfed by everyone until she sang. Her voice said, “I’m huge,” and her neck said, “Hide me next time.”

Hair color didn’t stand out, except perhaps for Jessica Chastain’s, whose red lips saved a dress that was the same color as her skin.

I’ve witnessed it more than once…a distraught woman running into the salon with the words, “I need someone to fix my hair!” One desperate lady banged on the locked doors, pointing to her bright orange hair with tears in her eyes. We let her in and stayed until midnight, turning the alarmingly orange tresses to hues of gorgeous blond, and finishing her damaged ends with a fabulous cut. She thanked George Mennella at least a hundred times.

It happened again yesterday, a disaster in hair color and a desperate young lady who didn’t want to go out in public. George examined the damage like a doctor evaluating a difficult case. Then the words, “I can make you beautiful again,” and the look of hope in the client’s eyes.
George started the process, dry cutting it so that it had shape and form…combing and painting, decolorizing the hair strand by strand, until the roots were no longer orange, and the client relaxed in the chair, knowing she could go out in public again. A gorgeous cut and finish was the icing on the cake. It took painstaking hours, but his patience was endless and the client’s gratitude?…Well, let’s say it was boundless.

I just watched Richard Gere in his new movie, Arbitrage, and despite his perfect family complete with mistress and mansion, mishandled money (read thievery) and moral ambiguity, yes, I rooted for him all the way.
He’s the best looking gray-haired hottie in the business.
But except for Richard and the gorgeous older model, Carmen, (duped out of her money by the morally bankrupt Bernie Madoff), gray hair is out, particularly for women.

Helen Gurley Brown spurred the sexual revolution by declaring that women could have it all…children, a career, and great sex. Whenever I heard her speak, I liked her flirty manner, her playfulness, and her quick wit. She was…well, girly, such an apt term for a woman with Gurley as a middle name.
She believed in men and women being nice to each other.
She believed in hard work, and playing hard as well.
She believed in love, and passion, and women wanting to have sex.

Katie Holmes needs a change. Sure, most of the gossip columns report that she is tired of living under husband Tom’s shadow. That poor (okay, rich) Tommy was blindsided. That he told reporters just three weeks ago, “My family and marriage are most important to me.”
And then, Katie implodes and wrecks his life plans.

My playwright sister, Bara Swain, and I had the pleasure of being served very stiff vodka tonics by Burt Reynolds following her plays’ debut in Jupiter over the weekend. I was charmed and entranced by this self-effacing delight of a man, who acted less the icon, and more a gracious hunk of a man. Warmth and humor emanated, and he himself was entranced and amused by my sister and her work.
But sitting across the table from us was an actress who asked me, point-blank, “Where did you get your color done?” As delighted as I was by Mr. Reynold’s proximity, she was entranced by my….hair. Apparently you can’t get hair color like that in the wilds of Florida.

I recently had a tag sale at my house. It was an out-of-body experience, with people roaming through my home of fifteen years, idly picking up and discarding treasures of ours. One man held up an original painting and said, “I’ll give you a couple of bucks for it. I like the frame.”
We were nickel and dimed to death, until I said yes to every offer. One sweet old lady stole six gold teaspoons that belonged to my daughter’s American Doll teaset. I saw them in her hand. They disappeared forever. And who stuffed my favorite pleather pants down her shirt?

The funny thing is, not a single frame sold. I painstakingly removed and saved over one hundred photos, and set the frames in my grandmother’s china closet. Nada. Zilch. Zero sold. It seems that people simply use their phones to show pictures. Frames? Obsolete. And because Jeff Lewis the Decorator says that three items on a surface is chic, and the rest is clutter, they’re all in a box.
