I’m not always inspired. And if I wait for that ping of electricity to penetrate my brain, that eureka called “an idea”, it may never come.

May I recommend sheer, hard work. Pen to paper. Or fingers to computer. If you’re writing, don’t complete that paragraph…leave something for next time, so that you can avoid writer’s block. Painting, just start doodling, or paint the mailbox with flowers.

Always have materials handy. Take a class. Go to a museum. Walk in the garden. But do the work. Inspiration won’t always make you move your fingers over the keyboard.

Ashley, our latest bachelorette, needs to explore her low self esteem.  We witness Bentley telling us, “I’m going to make Ashley cry tonight,” and he does. He wishes she was Emily, the winning blond from last season, confirming Ashley’s own fears.

“She’s not my type,” he tells the camera. Flash forward to Ashley after Bentley goes home, leaving behind his famous dot dot dot…”you never know” torturing her well into the next episode. A wreck under a blanket.

“He’s just not that into you?” doesn’t register. She hasn’t read the book, or seen the movie, or examined the evidence, for that matter. She “feels a connection,” and has Bentley the villain, invited back so that she can torture herself (and us) some more.

Recently, a lovely lady was scammed by a crying boy, her supposed grandson, on the telephone, imploring first his grandfather and then his grandmother, to wire him $3000 to get him out of a jam in Spain. “Don’t tell my parents,” he begged them.

And they didn’t. The young man gave grandma the phone number for the “Spanish Consulate”, except that it was a continuation of the scam. It seems that the consulate needed another $3000 for the “boy’s” trial and airfare home. Our client wired the money.

A sobbiing young man can render any no-nonsense person emotionally vulnerable. It can also hide the timbre of his real voice.

We told our client to forgive herself. No one had died. Only her ego and her pocket were damaged. She couldn’t fault herself for loving someone.

Okay ladies. Some of you can sing, some of you can dance, some of you know how to diet…(how else do you keep that thin?)

I saw the new Harry Potter the other day, and, SPOILER  ALERT, a particular character dies towards the end of the movie. I was unmoved, just a tad sad.

I also thought that as much as I enjoyed the movie, parts of it were reminiscent of Lord of the Rings…like the locket around the neck affecting the characters negatively.

But a little girl was absolutely SOBBING her eyes out, and her mother was trying to comfort, and shush her, as the sobs became wailing.

My crying was unstoppable when I was a little girl. The movie? The Swan. The handsome poor teacher leaves his pupil, despite their love. I cried for days. I wonder if my separation anxiety has to do with the damned movie?

So I get dressed in the morning in the outfit that I’ve planned in my head the night before. Funky tights ala Betsy Johnson. A black pencil skirt cinched at the waist with a wide belt. My faux diamond necklace. My new way too expensive concealer which hides the bags under my eyes. A bold red lip, very little makeup on my eyes. (I remember to emphasize either the eyes or the lips, rarely both.)

I check out my reflection in the long mirror in the hallway.

I look good. I feel attractive. Heads will turn.

And not a single person compliments me all day. How can this be? And why does it mean that I will never wear that particular ensemble again?

I hate to say it, I really do. But I think it means I have low self-esteem.

Or that I need another person’s stamp of approval before I’m sure of my own sense of fashion.

Of course, it may mean that I look SO good that I intimidate people. I’ll never know, because I’m already stuffing the outfit in the back of the closet to gather dust.
