Ashley, our latest bachelorette, needs to explore her low self esteem.  We witness Bentley telling us, “I’m going to make Ashley cry tonight,” and he does. He wishes she was Emily, the winning blond from last season, confirming Ashley’s own fears.

“She’s not my type,” he tells the camera. Flash forward to Ashley after Bentley goes home, leaving behind his famous dot dot dot…”you never know” torturing her well into the next episode. A wreck under a blanket.

“He’s just not that into you?” doesn’t register. She hasn’t read the book, or seen the movie, or examined the evidence, for that matter. She “feels a connection,” and has Bentley the villain, invited back so that she can torture herself (and us) some more.

Ashley had a makeover, and she looks great. But the makeover has to start from within, doesn’t it? I was thinking about compassion the other day. Some people are better at it than others.

We have a homeless man who comes into the salon for coffee. I try to get him in, and out, because he’s tall, imposing, and scares me (and our clients.) George chats with him easily, but I can’t understand a word he says.  He stands at the counter and speaks gibberish to me. Is he mentally challenged? High? Is he going to mug me?

He doesn’t. He drops a necklace on the desk and says, “This is for you.”

Again, I think, did he rip this off someone’s neck? Find it on the street? Was it his mother’s treasure? I say, “Thank you, but why don’t you give it to your girlfriend instead?” He mumbles something, retrieves the necklace, and goes away. Air freshener is necessary.

We have another man, a musician, who lives in his van all year long. He comes to the salon at the end of the day, plugs in his phone, washes up in the bathroom, and gets a shampoo, maybe once a month. We don’t know how he has survived the winter. He is erudite, pleasant, and bundled up in every item of clothing he owns.

A third person, a lady in braids and bright lipstick, stands and stares at us through the window until she gets her favorite candy…soft peppermints, not hard, which she stuffs in her knapsack. Then she leaves with a smile.

But when a client told me, “You’ve lost weight, haven’t you?”, what did I think? That I must have looked fat before.

The next day, decked out in my new (and very expensive) foundation and concealer, a client commented,

“You’re wearing new makeup! It looks better than that white stuff you usually wear.”

Now, had I known that I was looking like a cosmetic ghost, would I have wanted her to tell me? Possibly not.

The lethal compliment can be tricky.

Okay, there’s more. Last night, a friend remarked, “I love that lipstick you’re wearing! That red color you wore the other day was awful.”

We had a new client come into Bewitched today, and she wasn’t popular. She glowered at the shampoo person, and wasn’t much nicer to the manicurist. But when she walked toward me, she glided, so gracefully, I couldn’t keep my eyes off her. I told her so, and she lit up, her smile my reward.

From now on, if I THINK it, I say it. I might make someone’s day, and in the process, she might make our day better.

So when I read about the dark smokey eye, I had to try it. We have three wonderful makeup artists here at the shop, but I did my eyes at home.

My daughter was the first to notice. “Is that a black eye?” she asked me, over toast and coffee.

Today I woke up to a bowl of oatmeal without my blueberries. A lack of memory has been plaguing me lately, and I know I can blame it on lots of things. My age. Overload. Stress. Too much reality t.v. The list goes on.

So I raced to the supermarket only to find that blueberries have gone up to five dollars for a small carton. The raspberries were $1.99. But I don’t think they help your memory. (I looked it up, but who can remember?)

I figured I’d ration them out, twenty blueberries a bowl, and make the carton last.

Or maybe, if I’m lucky, I’ll forget how much I paid for the blueberries that will improve my memory.

What I DO remember is that I’ve never gotten more compliments on my hair, following my recent Geo Palette color. Unfortunately, a new poll has come out reporting that the unemployed spouse will cheat on his partner four to five times more than someone with a job. We know his ego is shot to smithereens.
And that it’s hard to resurrect his injured manhood by cleaning the house, or gardening, or playing video games.
On the flip side, there is more bad news. The husband earning significantly more money than his wife is also more likely to cheat.
Here’s the deal, says the poll. In the most successful partnerships, the wife earns seventy percent of the husband’s salary. It doesn’t sound fair to us!
We suggest a few things. The partner should help her significant other look fast and hard for a job. Keep him busy. Don’t let idle friends keep him company. Pray.
