Mine did. Apparently my grandmother touched the back of her head last night, and Grandma died fifteen years ago.  I told her, “Go for it. Burn those herbs and purify that space.” But Grandma was a force to be reckoned with…funny, feisty, and adorable. So smudge away, roomie, but if we’re lucky, she will haunt us forever.

I’m sure the Toronto policeman whose remark about women who dress like sluts inviting unwanted advances (read sexual abuse) is astounded by the movement he inadvertently caused: the slut walk.

A series of protests in which scantily dresses women take to the city streets makes the statement that women should be able to wear whatever they choose without being fearful. Our bodies, our choice, and no one has the right to make a move or a touch without our consent.

So if your daughter leaves the house with the word “slut” written across her cheek, don’t despair. We march for the cause that stirs our passion, don’t we?

I was watching a beautiful blond walk past the salon when I happened to glance at a male who shall not be named, craning his neck to have a look.

I laughed, and he laughed, too. “She could use a Palette,” he said, not sheepishly at all.

“Run after her,” I told him, but he behaved decorously and settled his neck back into place.

I just got my color done with the Geo Palette Hair System, and there I was, standing at the gas pump pumping gas I can’t afford, and a man at the opposite pump said, “I love your hair.”

I said, “Thank you,” and he said, “Where do you come from?”

“Bewitched Salon,” I said, pointing down the street. “Take your girlfriend there, and she can get the best color ever.”

He then asked me if I wanted to be his girlfriend, and I thought, This is creepy, but I have to admit, his remark about my hair was refreshingly simple.

Sometimes, a pick-up line is nice. I’m not saying that I want someone to point at my butt and say, “Is this seat taken?” But when we’re old and gray (okay, maybe never), I think we might just miss it.

I turned on a movie the other day that I had seen when I was a teenager: Splendor in the Grass.  About broken hearts and madness, bad girls and good girls…but back in the day, it had left me cold. Life lessons made me absolutely love it when I watched it again, more than forty years later! Because I’ve lived since then: I’ve been the bad girl and the good girl, made poor choices and good choices, had my heart broken. I haven’t gone mad, like Natalie Wood, unless anxiety attacks count!

My son, a film major, watches a film classic a day. We’re on an Alfred Hitchcock kick now, and Rear Window resonates but Vertigo does not. North by Northwest is fun and thrilling, and confirms for my son that Hitchcock loves blondes. Tippi Hedron, Kim Novak, Eva Marie Saint, Doris Day, Janet Leigh, and my favorite ice goddess, Grace Kelly. From what I hear, Alfred claimed that blonds photographed better, and made better heroines. It doesn’t matter. Hitchcock offered us pure entertainment.

Okay, so Arnold betrayed his wife and has a love child. A blogger wrote, “I’m never watching a Schwarzenegger movie again.” Huh? Does that mean I have to forever ignore Woody Allen movies? And what about Mel? Ban him to hell? How about Roman Polanski? Avoid him like the plague? My father was a left wing activist from way back. But he enjoyed watching the occasional John Wayne movie, (although he liked Robert Ryan’s movies and politics better.)

And Kramer! I have to admit, when I watch Seinfeld re-runs, I’m not thinking about Michael RIchards’ racist ranting a few years back.

Is the talent all gone when the ethics are shot?

Just saying.

I hope being broke doesn’t shorten my life. And I hope it’s only temporary. I turn down dinner with friends for the same reason…who wants to hear about my money gripes? I can only talk about reality televison or the burglaries in my area or relationships for so long. A glass of wine is good…but that eight dollars might better be saved for gas…guzzle the liquor or have my car guzzle the gas?

Or, would I rather get a shirt, or go out  to eat?
