A young girl came into Bewitched Salon today to get her hair dyed. She wanted a swathe of brilliant purple and an edgy cut. Our colorist, Jennifer, who sports pink and violet highlights, was in seventh heaven.

I spoke to the girl’s mother. who said, “We prefer crazy hair color to face piercings.” Then she asked me if I had a valium.

“How about coffee and a bagel?” I suggested. We talked about the Sixties, with girls shedding their bras and boys growing their hair. Teenagers going through a rite of passage, like her daughter.

Watching the young lady’s face in the mirror, I could see that ecstatic glint in her eye.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” I asked.

“A tattoo artist,” she replied. Absolutely perfect.
